Over 300 years with crystal chandeliers

Crystal Chandeliers have existed since the middle of the 17th -century. At that time it was a luxury only affordable by royalties, the nobility and the churches.

An efficient way to enhance the light from a wax candle
The original intention with crystal chandeliers was to spread and reflect the light from wax and tallow candles. These chandeliers were decorated with light-breaking rock crystals, which delightfully spread the light of the wax candles. Large mirrors and shining plates of brass were also used in the same purpose.

The aesthetics takes over

Along with the evolvement of more effective light sources, such as the paraffin lamp and the incandescent lamp, the claims for functionality grew weaker and to the benefit of a more superficial aesthetic. The chandelier was to be an eye-catcher even when it was not light up.

In the 18th century most of the Swedish crystal chandeliers were made by Kungsholms glassworks in Stockholm.
